How to Learn Arabic

How to Learn Arabic Is Learning Arabic Difficult? And How Long Does It Take? ChaptersIs It Difficult to Learn Arabic for Beginners? How Much Time Does It Take to Learn Arabic? Can You Learn Arabic In One Month With Arabic Lessons? You’ll often hear how difficult it is to learn Arabic for Europeans or North Americans. The Arabic alphabet, byzantine grammar, and pronunciation are all radically different from our Romance and Germanic roots, not to mention the Arabic grammar and how to pronoun some words and phrases.A native English speaker can learn to speak Italian, Spanish, or French without too much difficulty because all the Indo-European languages have similar linguistic roots. When you first begin studying Arabic, you’ll suddenly discover that it’s a lot more difficult than you thought. For a complete newcomer to the language, learning all of its forms and rules can be quite challenging.Of course, we aren’t denying that it can be a struggle, but as Jacques CÅ"ur (the first French merchant to negotiate and establish commercial relationships with the peop le of the Middle East in the 15th century) said, “for a brave soul, nothing is impossible.”And how long will it take to learn the Arabic language? One month? A year? More than a year? How much work will it take to learn Arabic? What are the main challenges you face studying the language? That’s what we’ll be discussing in this article - here are our best thoughts and advice on how hard it is to learn Arabic, and how long it will take you to become fluent. Like they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. So, how hard is it to learn Arabic?Learning Arabic is difficult, but if your persevere you will achieve your goals! The decision to learn the Arabic language will require a considerable personal investment. Is it difficult to learn spoken Arabic dialects? A linguist might equivocate and tell you, “maybe so, maybe no.”Not everyone who attempts to study Arabic will have the same ability to grasp new concepts quickly. For some people, learning the basics of the Arabic language will be easier than for others, especially if they’ve already studied another language like French, Spanish, Italian, or German.Someone who begins taking Arabic classes from a young age will also find it easier to pick up the language’s alphabet, grammar with its personal and possessive pronouns, suffixes, and prefixes, and vocabulary.Right from the start, it’s a good idea to put your preconceptions and clichés about Arabic to one side - as the 5th most spoken language in the world and an official language in 23 countries, it is very useful to learn to speak Arabic. But because of its alphabet and its script, the language of the Quran can often seem impossible to learn.Arabic is a Semitic language, meaning it is a trilateral language, one where the spoken version of the language has a common root that can be traced to three consonants. With only a few vowels and many consonants, the Arabic language is quite different from American English, or German, French, or Spanish.Arabic pronunciation requires a sort of guttural gymnastics, and language students will have to leave their comfort zone behind. Learning to speak Arabic can often feel like trying to find your way out of a boobytrapped house. However, you’d be surprised to realize just how many Arabic words we use in English every day.As you go through your Arabic classes you’ll quickly realize that many of our everyday words have been borrowed from Arabic, and you may even recognize some of the sounds. Here’s our advice for learning Arabic the easy way:Breakdown your challengesLet go of your preconceptions of the Arabic languageLearn to recognise the new sounds that you aren’t familiar withMaster the Arabic alphabet, with its 4 styles of each of the 28 letters (beginning, middle, end, and solo), These need to be learned by heart, and this is one of the hardest things to do for a beginner.Decide which type of Arabic to learn. The diglossia of the language into written and spoken forms means there’s a careful choice to make with the version of the language you learn. It is more difficult to learn spoken Arabic dialects, because each version is different across the Arab world depending on the country you’re in, with each dialect having it's own colloquial native language which is enough to confuse any new learner. It’s much better to go wit h Modern Standard Arabic, which like the name suggests, has been standardized for all the Arab countries.Learn the Arabic script and get used to reading it from right to left - it’s an extra challenge when you’re coming from a language that uses the Latin alphabet. Finally, if you truly want to become bilingual in Arabic, or even if you just want to learn the basics of the language, it’s worth investing in some good learning materials: make a point of speaking to native Arabic speakers to improve your verbal skills, and check out books, dictionaries, online Arabic classes, and apps to help you learn Arabic for free…not to mention private Arabic lessons London or classes at a language school.Learning Arabic is a fairly complicated goal, but it isn’t impossible to achieve if you’re committed. There are ways to make learning Arabic slightly easier, but is it possible to learn quickly? How Much Time Does It Take to Learn Arabic? There’s no magic formula, and the time it takes you to learn Arabic will depend on you and your levels of motivation. In order to learn Arabic quickly, it’s especially important to not let yourself become discouraged. Find some help so you aren’t on your own. However, here are a few guidelines to help you quickly learn Arabic:Study regularlyDon’t give upFind learning tools that are right for your level.Learning to speak, read, and write Arabic doesn't require as much studying as becoming bilingual. But there’s still no set amount of hours that will make you perfect at Arabic. For an English speaker, it’ll always be easier to learn Spanish or German than to learn Arabic. However, it is true that you can learn Arabic through Spanish (a Romance language), due to their close history. The Iberian peninsula (ie, Spain and Portugal) and Septimania (today the Languedoc region of France) were conquered by the Omayyad Caliphate (an Arab dynasty which traces its roots to Mohammed) from 711 when Sevilla was conquered. For more than 700 years, Islam and Arabic mixed with the Spanish language. The Visigoth and Latin peoples converted to Islam, and 80% of the population was Muslim, right up until the long  â€œReconquista” and the fall of Grenada in 1492.Medieval Spain, once known as Al-Andalus, assimilated many different aspects of Arabic culture, such as architecture, arts, science, literature, and language.Due to the period which followed the victory for the Arabs from Sevilla to Arles, the Spanish language now contains more than 4000 Arabic words today. In order to learn the Arabic language, immerse yourself in the language and culture. Repeat, reflect, and work on your Arabic.A few weeks of classes won’t be enough. You can take intensive classes to learn quickly, but you’ll really need a few months to learn to read and write the Arabic alphabet properly, not to mention master the grammar (pronouns, verbs, and sentence construction) and idiomatic expressions.Although some people challenge this, it is widely thought that an American or a French person who wants to learn Arabic will need at least 88 weeks (2200 hours) of classes in order to learn to speak Arabic. In contrast, learning French would take just 600 hours. The Assimil method helps Arabic students work on repeating and memorizing simple sentences that use vocabulary and adverbs to learn progressively. But all of these daily chores need to be learnt in Arabic - run errands, clean the house, read the papers, listen to the Moroccan or Egyptian radio - and its crucial to commit at least 15 to 20 minutes to studying every day.In order to succeed at learning Arabic, there are many tools you can use to assist in your studies:Online videos and podcastsArabic conversations between native speakersBooks that help you work through each level (introduction to Arabic, Arabic for beginners, intermediates, or advanced).Listen to Moroccan or Egyptian singers and imagine yourself transported to a full immersion experience.Sign up for private Arab ic classes at home - there are many ways to find private teachers, experienced at teaching Arabic to adults and children of all ages. Superprof is one.Arabic language classes at a language school or a mosqueClasses in high school or university - one module lasts for one or two semesters and can help you learn all the basics of literary Arabic (alphabet, reading and writing the Arabic script, grammar, verbs, vocabulary, and pronunciation).Online Arabic classes - there are tons of websites offering free online courses to learn Arabic quicklyStudy abroad - the best way to learn out of them all. How is the GMAT Scored

How is the GMAT Scored Score reports The GMAT consists of four unique sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Analytical Writing, and Integrated Reasoning, each of which is graded separately. The score report also includes a total scaled score from 200-800. For the multiple-choice quantitative and verbal portions, the GMAT creates a scaled score, instead of a raw result, as the test is a computer analytical experience. If you answer a question correctly, the next problem will be more difficult, but if you are incorrect, the next one will be simpler. Therefore, each scaled score includes the number of problems answered correctly and their statistical numerical value due to the point system allocated to each question. Answering a challenging question correctly will earn you a higher mark than an easy problem. What is most important about a GMAT score? GMAT results are often confusing due to their scaling algorithm, but what is truly important is the scaled score percentile for quantitative and verbal. The higher the percentile, the more competitive your score will be. The ideal mark differs depending on your testing cohort (typically the testing year). This is some great information on how to improve your GMAT scorethat could help you. The Integrated Reasoning section This portion of the GMAT is scored 1-8 in one-point increments. It is not computer adaptive, and thus does not depend on question difficulty, and it will not be available for scoring on test day. Your result will be communicated via the official score report roughly two to three weeks later. The Analytical Writing section The analytical essay is graded on two scales, both from 0-6. One scale is a human reader, while the other is a computerized scoring system. If the marks received are different, they are then averaged. There are two items to consider about this essay: 1. Over 90% of test-takers, according to the GMAT website, score a 3 or higher on this portion. 2. Human grading is a time-consuming process, hence the delay in receiving your results. Here is some great information on how to improve your GMAT analytical writing scorethat you may find helpful. Cancelling scores While youre in the testing center, immediately after you complete the assessment, you will be prompted to retain or cancel your scores. There are two schools of thought in regard to this matter, but the GMAT fee is never refundable. If you studied (even if you didnt feel entirely prepared) and finished a reasonable percentage of the examination, it is wise to accept your scores. If you know unequivocally that you did not do very well (i.e. completed less than half, didnt write an essay, fell asleep during the test), then cancelling your scores may be a better idea. What now? If you received percentiles below the mark you were hoping for, keep in mind that scores and their relationships to percentiles fluctuate based on timing and your testing cohort. After additional preparationand sitting for another GMAT session, you should feel comfortable understanding that many students take the GMAT multiple times. You may also want to consider these daily activities that can improve your GMAT skills.

Lead With No Title - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / Lead With No Title - Introvert Whisperer Lead With No Title? Many people automatically dismiss things when they see something about leadership or being a leader as not pertaining to them.   After all, if they aren’t a manager or don’t intend to manage, the information really doesn’t have anything for them to pay attention to, right?   No, not necessarily. Leadership skills are something that will enhance your ability to be successful in your career no matter what direction you head.   If you pay attention to the people you have seen who have any amount of career success, you will notice that they exhibit some of the same behaviors.   These skills are the basis for promotion and ultimately becoming a manager, but even if that isn’t where you want to head, you will discover career success by mastering them. (If you have these skills, the boss will love you!) Let’s look at some of the skills that a leader possesses and why they will serve you well throughout your career:   Shows initiative. This is the skill of seeing something that needs to be done and doing it without being assigned to do it. This might include generating ideas, volunteering for projects and looking for a better solution.   Bosses love people who do this, because as much as you might not realize it, they prefer for you to “see” what needs to be done rather than them having to tell you. Accepts responsibility. Be responsible for yourself and perhaps others. Rally others to get something accomplished or improve a process.   This will help the manager as they can’t always know everything that is going on or head up all efforts to improve things. Communicates effectively. You don’t have to “pull” information out of leaders â€" they keep you well informed. Communication is the weakest link in most groups, and that can lead to all kinds of issues. When you keep people in the loop, informed of things in the process, as well as completed you save yourself and other people time. Thinks positively. Granted even the most positive of us like to complain and vent.   Leaders keep that to a minimum and tend to think about what’s possible.   It’s motivational to others. Looks to the future. A person can really be a leader when they think about a bigger picture than just today and how things are done now.   They look for continuous improvement and ongoing learning.   This spurs the thinking and ideas for how things could be made better. As you can see, none of these things are difficult and there is no mention of promotion.   This is the bucket list of all hopeful managers â€" hopeful that they will have a department full of people who are leaders. Great Leadership is a skill you can learn and I’ve developed a program to increase your skills in just 6 short weeks with a live, interactive training.   Check out the details and be ready to get going: https://introvertwhisperer.leadpages.co/leadlikeyoumeanitpilot/ By Dorothy Tannahill-Moran

Common GMAT Mistakes How to Avoid Them - The Verbal and Writing Sections GMAT MBA Admissions Blog The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is intended to evaluate the ability to interpret and processinformation or knowledge within a specified period oftime. If you’re unsure whether the GMAT or the GRE is the best option for your specific situation, see our advice here. Typically, the main obstacles to reaching your target score on the GMAT begin with the bad habits we establish taking our first standardized exams. For a lot of us, that is the SAT. It is not certainly not unheard of for high school students to attempt multiple strategies besides the ones that work best and actually address the content they will be tested on. Too often, if we don’t have a good grasp on the content, we avoid hunkering down and tackling it; instead, many of us resort to last minute cramming or an all-night marathon session a couple of days before the test date. This works as well on the GMAT as it does for the SAT (not very well). Now that the education community has generally accepted that standardized exams are not IQ tests, we know that things like deliberate, focused practice, growth mindset, and studying over time does increase scores. Creating a study plan tailored to your strengths and weaknesses, taking practice tests, and working with a tutor who’s an expert on the exam and test taking strategies are all good places to start. In this article, we'll focus on common mistakes made while taking the Verbal and Writing sections of the GMAT, and specific ways to avoid them. The GMAT Format In terms of the test format, the GMAT can be divided into two main sections: mathematical reasoning and verbal comprehension. In that sense, it is very similar to its SAT counterpart. The difference is that, unlike the SAT where the format poses an array of multiple choice questions with minimal interrelation to each other, both GMAT sections present a substantial amount of information that is expected to be processed not onlysimultaneously, but also in a more wholesome and systemic manner. This serves toseparate memory or mimetic tactics from contributing to the scoring--a factor the GMAT purports to eliminate from the candidate pool. The Verbal Section To study efficiently, the student's best move is to identify their personal strengths and weaknesses. If their math skills and content knowledge are strong;then their focus should be centered on the verbal aspect of the testing. However, that does not mean that this student shouldn’t spend time reviewing elements of algebra, geometry, and arithmetic. The verbal section hinges inordinately on mastery of Englishgrammar and composition; on the part of the test-taker as well as through the reading passages provided, most of which are referenced from academic or industrial fields. An effective way to prepare for those types of questions are: To read over diverse topics and themes in publications such as newspapers, magazines, classic literature well in advance of the test date. This is vital for learning the techniques for identifying themain idea, supportingevidence, implication, inference, and subtle conclusions of professional writing. Obtain a grammar book from the public library. This will provide the student with clear and abundant examples and exercises and is a great way to reacquaint him or herself with basic writing skills if there is aserious lack of familiarity. This means reviewing: verb tense, subject-verb agreement, quantity, parallel phrasing, terminology, spelling, and so on. The sentence portion of the verbal section is merely highlighting a student's ability to spot basic grammar anomalies. The Analytical Writing Assessment The last consideration in the often formidable verbal test is the essay. The GMAT accomplishes this measurement of aptitude by listing an argument, hypothetical or actual, that is preceded with a brief summary of the topic followed by the writing requirement in the form of a prompt. There are two items that the student must adhere to in order to convincingly and compellingly exhibit avalid response to the essay portion of the test: Precisely and accurately address the points emanating from the question. This may seem like common sense, but nervous test takers have a tendency to avoid directly addressing the question. For example, if the prompt asks you to choose a side, make sure you have chosen and stated your side within the first few sentences â€" and stick with it. The introduction paragraph must refer back to the prompt, at the very least. The first body paragraph should provide a description of the issue confronted in the question. The second paragraph should emphasize any counterargument to the original dilemma. The last body paragraph is the student’s position within the overall argument, supported by what has been said in all previous paragraphs. Correct grammar and structure is imperative to achieving a high score. That is to say: proper punctuation, precise spelling and capitalization, organized and efficient phrasing of themes and discussion. The essay is testing the student's level of conveying concepts and expressionthrough the English language, already expecting the individual to be a master of syntax. Follow these tips on the Verbal and Writing sections of the GMAT, and you'll be well on your way to achieving that target score. Beat the Summer Slide!

Beat the Summer Slide! First, you may be asking, what exactly is the summer slide? The latest playground instalment, perhaps? A new water park feature?   The Summer Slide is actually none of these things! It’s a term coined by educational psychologist Harris Cooper, who found that US schoolchildren regress in all subjects over the summer holidays, by an average of a month â€" a whopping 2.6 months in maths. How can you prevent this summer learning loss? It is important that the kids have some down time and RR, especially for those students who need time to catch their breath after the agony of June exams.  Just a few lessons of tutoring over the summer holidays can help students feel better prepared for the term ahead. Here are some tips for parents and tutors, to retain some learning over the summer.  1.      Make work fun Summer learning should be fun. Whether you’re educating your children yourself, or enlisting the help of or tutor, take the lessons outside the classroom and discover activities that your child will enjoy. Find out about next year’s curriculum; just hearing about a topic in advance helps pupils to learn it quickly in the classroom. Create a treasure hunt with subject-specific clues â€" this has the added advantage of keeping them occupied for some time, depending on how tricky the questions are.  2.            Riveting Reading Educational Psychologist Harris Cooper found that the poorest children lose the most reading skills, while those better off actually improved over the summer. The long summer break can be an opportunity for children to discover reading. Be inventive; even the most reluctant reader just needs the right trigger. For example many parents find their children enjoy using ebooks. You can buy affordable ebook readers, such as the kindle, that give your child access to reading material in a format that they are used to. You could try the Summer Reading Challenge, which rewards children with stickers and certificates, or the Reading Chest.  3.            Marvellous Maths Adapt recipe quantities while cooking to familiarise children with dividing, multiplying and using fractions. These questions crop up everywhere from primary school to GCSE Maths. Next time you’re begged for a trip to Thorpe Park, ask your child to calculate the cost for the whole family. For the cash-strapped parent, this might have benefits beyond maths practice! When your 6-year-old asks, again,  how long  till his best friend arrives: ask him to work out the time in hours and minutes (or days and hours, depending on how early the excitement starts to build…) Young children find time calculations a challenge, counting in a base of 60 instead of the normal 10s and 100s. Children are natural entrepreneurs: if it would be safe and you can keep an eye on them, a home-made lemonade stall requires plenty of maths practice. Just keep an eye on the recipe to make sure they produce something drinkable! Ask them to calculate the profit margin and hourly earnings - useful to know when employing a younger sibling… Puzzles like Kakuro and Calcudoku  are a god-send to get children doing the four main operations (+, -, x, ÷) really quickly. It’s amazing how much even teenagers can benefit!  4.            Whirlwind Writing Long car journey? As a pre-teen with 3 younger siblings,  I had a whole series of car-time tales  about Ruthy the rat who rode the tube around London with her ratty friends. Kill two birds with one stone: encouraging your children to pass the time telling stories develops their linguistic creativity as well as stopping them from pinching each other, kicking your seat and dropping banana skins down the driver’s neck (yes, I’m afraid we were that awful). You can offer a prize for the best story. Sign up to Creative Writing 4 Kids  ( £4.99/month) where children write their own online book for themselves and their friends. Postcards are also a cheap, appealing way of getting a child to pen a few lines to a friend.  5.            Super Science Normally forbidden, night-time activities have a special thrill. Take your child outside to see the next New Moon. Repeat every 7 days to see the whole cycle - or go more often to observe the gibbous and crescent moons. Check the moon phases and rising times. Take advantage of the British summer weather: after the next rain shower, draw chalk circles round a few puddles, to observe the water cycle. Even in our damp conditions, your child will see evaporation in action as the puddle shrinks. In the garden or park, ask your child to collect  small  (one leaf is good) samples from different plant species. Go over these samples together, discussing differences and similarities, and why one plant is classed as a different species from another. 6.       Find a tutor   Children are remarkably good at learning in different environments with different people, and if you can afford some extra help, a tutor could be just what they need to inject some educational fun into the holidays. This  doesn’t  mean someone who will sit at home forcing algebra over the kitchen table! Most tutors are, by now, as fed up of painful exam-cramming as you and your children, and will be only too happy to rediscover the joy of learning over summer. Some families even take a tutor away on holiday with them. While this will add considerably to the holiday’s price tag, it can be a fantastic way to keep up your childrens’ learning and physical activity, while you get to recover and relax over a cocktail… To find the right Tutor in your area search Tutorfair.
